Cushing's disease is caused by hyperadrenocorticism. Equine Cushing's disease results from functional adenomas or adenomatous hyperplasia of the pituitary (pars intermedia). Some reports indicate that the average age of affected horses is around 19 years. These animals often suffer from haircoat abnormlities (hirsutism). In TCM, Cushing's disease is often considered to be one of Xiao-ke diseases, especially Xia-xiao. There are often three Patterns: Yin Deficiency, Qi-yin Deficiency and Yang Deficiency. With age, the Kidney Yin and Yang falls. The first stage of Cushing's disease can be Kidney Yin Deficiency which can cause Kidney Qi Deficiency and subsequently lead to Kidney Qi-Yin Deficiency. Kidney Yang Deficiency may be the last stage of Cushing's disease. Ophiopogon Powder (A3510), Rehmannia 11 (A2194) and Rehmannia 14 (A0150) are used for Kidney Yin Deficiency, Kidney Qi-Yin Deficiency, and Kidney Yang Deficiency respectively. Clinical observations indicate that Rehmannia 14 is very effective for treating Cushing's disease due to Kidney Yang Deficiency in horses and dogs.
